Genevieve Walden has an M.S. in Ecology and Systematic Biology from San Francisco State University, and is currently a third-year Ph.D. candidate in the Baldwin Lab in the Department of Integrative Biology at UC Berkeley, working on systematics of the native plant subfamily Hydrophylloideae (Boraginaceae).
Genevieve has become instrumental in contributing her expertise on this large family of native species, many of which are rare and listed as sensitive. In short, she has become the world expert on the evolutionary history and relationships of this group.
The significance of this is straightforward: if we are to understand how to protect and conserve our natural environment, we must understand the details of this environment, and it is critical that biologists like Genevieve undertake this difficult work.
