Graduate Advising

Graduate Studies provides comprehensive advising for both prospective students thinking of attending SF State as well as current students who need advice on navigating through the steps needed for a successful academic career to graduation.


The Division of Graduate Studies offers counseling and advising regarding issues ranging from applications to graduation for current, prospective, credential, or post-baccalaureate students.

National Science Foundation
  1. The SFSU Professional Science Master's program has been awared funding by the National Science Foundation as one of 21 projects funded nationally.
    • During 2010 - 2013, more than 20 SFSU PSM students have recieved prestigious NSF scolarships for interdisciplinary graduate training in Biotechnology and Stem Cell Science.
    • 91% of students admitted to the Communicative Disorders program over the last 6 years also enrolled in that program.
  1. Psychology has an average admit to enroll rate of 86%, who went on to enroll and attend the program.
  2. Creative Writing, Philosophy and Cinema programs recieve high domestic, non-resident applicants each year.
  3. SFSU's Master's in Social Work is one of our highest applied for programs averaging nearly 500 applications a year and has maintained a rate of 77% applied students who go on to enroll.
  4. SFSU in recognition of its original charter/roots, continues to provide highly demanded teaching programs in both Secondary Education-Single Subject and Elementary Education-Multiple Subject.
    • With averages of nearly 400 applicants a year to both programs, they maintain an impressive 91% and 92% of these admitted students who then enroll in the program.
  5.  Social Work, Physical Therapy and  Communicative Disorders have an average of 300 - 500 applicants with high enrollment to admit rates.
  6. Engineering has seen a steady growth with our Embedded Electrical & Computer Systems growing 190% and Structural & Earthquake at 135% over the last five years.
