Dr. Laurie Scolari’s doctoral research at San Francisco State University, entitled, “First Generation Students of Color: Easing their Transition to Community Colleges,” is based in her experiences as an advisor in the California community college system. Her work was recently published by Harvard Education Press.
Dr. Scolari focused on how colleges can best support incoming high school graduates, and improve their transition and success in community colleges. Her research, under the mentorship of Barbara Henderson, is leading to significant changes in the community college advising systems.
As a direct result of Dr. Scolari’s dissertation, she was hired to lead a statewide initiative to improve partnerships between high schools and community colleges. Her position is overseen by the Executive Director of the Career Ladders Project, an auxiliary of the California Community College Board of Governors
