SF State is conveniently accessible to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and MUNI (San Francisco bus & light-rail system) stations and the SF State free courtesy shuttle which can take you to the main campus and the BART station.
 

From downtown San Francisco:

By MUNI: Take MUNI Metro M-Oceanview streetcar and get off at the SF State stop (19th and Holloway).

SF State University is also served by MUNI bus lines: 17, 18, 28, and 29

By BART: Take any San Francisco-bound BART train to the Daly City BART station and then take the 28 or 28L bus line or the free SF State shuttle
