Patra Kathryn Holmes - Master of Science in Chemistry (Biochemistry).

Patra exemplifies the transformative impact SF State can have on an individual. A first-generation college student, Patra pursued a degree in a 14-year journey marked by determination and perseverance, ultimately earning dual B.S. degrees in Biochemistry and Cell and Molecular Biology with a Minor in Computer Applications, followed by an M.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry.

Patra discovered her true calling in research. She excelled as a scientist and became a dedicated mentor and advocate for students who didn’t initially see themselves as scientists. Through her involvement in Women in Science and Engineering and the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science, Patra helped create inclusive spaces where students from underrepresented backgrounds felt seen, supported, and empowered. She recruited and trained numerous young researchers in biophysics research.

In her graduate research, Patra engineered novel protein probes to investigate how molecular crowding affects protein solubility in cells, offering insight into the molecular basis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. She also contributed to developing a laser-based polarization technique for measuring protein diffusion in living cells, advancing tools for studying cellular biophysics.

Patra is pursuing her Ph.D. at Columbia University in New York and continues to use her position to positively impact others.
