Joanna (Liyi) Huang - 2024 Graduate Hood Recipient

Joanna Huang

Joanna (Liyi) Huang - Master of Arts, Education (Secondary Education)

Joanna Huang moved with her family from China to San Francisco at the age of 13. She graduated from Francisco Middle School and Washington High School in the San Francisco Unified School District, where she participated in "English Learner" programs, finding solidarity and community among immigrants from around the world. She graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Managerial Economics and a minor in Education. She received her single-subject credential in Math from SF State in 2022.

Joanna is in her 2nd year of teaching 7th grade at James Denman Middle School in San Francisco Unified, which has served as the site for her field study entitled, "Change in Students' Math Identities and Participation Over Time in a 7th grade Classroom Engaging with Groupworthy Tasks." Joanna's research is inspired by her own experiences with missing confidence in US schools, and she has come, partially through her credentialing experiences at SFSU, to see the possibility of supporting students who do not yet feel confident in mathematics to experience greater engagement, confidence, fun, and learning through groupwork.
