Tanya Aghazadeh - Graduate Hood Recipient
Master of Science, Business Analytics
Tanya has demonstrated exceptional academic excellence, maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, and brought a strong interdisciplinary foundation from prior degrees in Industrial and Systems Engineering, where she also graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Her academic work reflects both precision and a sustained commitment to high-level achievement.
During her time in the program, she contributed to the academic community as a Teaching Assistant for Data Mining, supporting students in understanding machine learning techniques, analytical methods, and real-world data applications. She also participated in the “Fun Friday” series, presenting to fellow students on navigating the program and successfully transitioning into the workforce.
She has developed strong hands-on experience through a variety of analytical projects. Her capstone project, conducted in collaboration with Kaiser Permanente, focuses on trend analysis and machine learning to generate actionable insights from complex datasets. She has also completed projects in machine learning, customer segmentation, and data visualization using Python, SQL, Tableau, and Power BI.
Tanya currently works as a Financial Analyst at the Surplus Line Association of California, a role secured during her final semester, where she applies data analytics to support informed financial decision-making. Her professional experience complements her academic training and strengthens her ability to translate data into strategic insight.

Her work reflects resilience, innovation, and determination as she builds a career in data analytics and technology.
Anna Guo
Master of Science, Accountancy
Anna, a first-generation college student, earned her undergraduate degree summa cum laude and completed her master’s in accountancy. Through internships and VITA service, she developed strong tax and accounting skills. Now a Tax Associate, she advises clients and plans to pursue her CPA license.
Quan Nhu Quan
Master of Science, Accounting and Analytics
Quan, an immigrant from Vietnam, overcame language and cultural barriers while developing resilience and a commitment to service. She earned her undergraduate degree summa cum laude and contributed extensively to VITA, TCE, and NFTE, supporting underserved communities through financial education and outreach.
Joshua Joseph Schmidt
Master of Science, Quantitative Economics
Joshua, a first-generation college graduate, is committed to public service. At SFSU, he contributed to research, teaching, and health equity work. Now a Crime Analyst with the California Department of Justice, he applies data and policy analysis to support efforts addressing gun violence.
Jianan Shen
Master of Science, Business Analytics
After a seven-year career in finance, Jianan transitioned to analytics, building coding skills from scratch. As a research assistant, she explored ESG disclosures using artificial intelligence and actively presented her work. She aims to integrate finance, analytics, and AI in her future career.
Neil Sterud III
Master of Business Administration, Business Administration
Neil is committed to community impact and professional excellence. He organized TEDxSF State, served as SHRM Vice President, and holds nonprofit board roles. A Navy Reservist, he balances military service with academic and professional pursuits while demonstrating leadership and dedication to service.
